Football or Soccer, Which Is It?

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup having captivated the world with exciting games, passionate fans and nail-biting drama, what better time to address the burning question of whether one should call the beautiful game soccer or football. While some will fiercely debate this, it basically comes down to a regional difference.

The sport was originally called football because players mainly use their feet. When the modern rules of the game were standardized in England in 1863, the name Association Football was adopted to distinguish it from Rugby Football. The word soccer began in England in the 1880s. It came from Association Football, shortened to Assoc., then playfully changed to soccer by adding the -er suffix, a popular Oxford University slang style. The word soccer spread worldwide, especially to countries where football referred to different sports, such as in the United States and Australia.

The differences in terminology surrounding the sport don’t stop there especially between British English and American English. Soccer versus football is just the tip of the iceberg. Below are some of the football/soccer terms that will not only help you know what is being said, but can also point to where the person speaking might be from.  Erik
